Landslide Features and Prevention Under the Effect of Housing via Slope-cutting in the Granite Area,Yanling County,Hunan Province

Abstract

The granite weathering crusts are extensivly developed in southeastern Hunan Province,resulting in frequent landslides.A notable example is the severe meteorological and geological disasters triggered by typhoon induced torrential rainfall in Zixing,Chenzhou City,on 26 July 2024.In addition to rainfall,landslides and rockfall disasters in this area are closely linked to slope-cutting for housing,resulting in complex interactions among collapse-and landslide-prone rock and soil masses,intense rainfall,slope cutting for housing,and landslide disasters.This study aims to clarify the disaster-causing patterns of landslides in this area,elucidate the interaction mechanisms between slope cutting for housing and rainfall-induced landslides,and subsequently develop disaster prevention strategies.Focusing on the granite slope area of Yanling County in southeastern Hunan,we combined regional disaster surveys wtih engineering geological analysis,experimental statistics,and machine learning data mining.Our investigation revealed the physical and mechanical properties of landslide soils,identified two primary landslides failure modes and classified three types of house damage.The findings indicate that the landslide-prone granite residual soil and the completely weathered layer form the disaster-forming background,slope cutting acts as the inducing condition,and rainfall serves as the triggering factor.The rear walls of houses built on cut slopes are the primary disaster-bearing objects,with slope height and the distance from the structure to the slope toe being the key geometric factors controlling disaster susceptibility.Households with cut slopes exceeding 5 meters require a higher vulnerability rating.Currently,distances from the slope toe are generally insufficient in such constructions,highliting the necessity of mandating a safe setback during building.Based on the characteristics of the disaster-bearing structures,we propose a reinforcement strategy for the rear wall of planned houses:—"wall partitioning and replacing large windows with smaller ones",to enhance the resilience of houses built on cut slopes.
