Exploring the Use Laws of Honey in Zhang Zhongjing's Treatise on Cold Damage and Miscellaneous Diseases

Abstract
Honey is a kind of Chinese medicinal with dual purposes as both food and medicine,as well as a major adjuvant that also pos-sesses therapeutic properties.In the honey-involving formulas within Zhang Zhongjing's Treatise on Cold Damage and Miscellaneous Dis-eases,distinctions are made between honey,edible honey,and white honey.The primary difference between white honey and edible hon-ey lies in their processing state:white honey refers to raw honey from which white crystals have separated,whereas edible honey denotes honey that has been processed through cooking into a"syrup-like"aged honey.In Zhang Zhongjing's formulas,honey serves two main purposes:as a formulation adjuvant and as a processing adjuvant.Honey,with its sweet taste,possesses significant flavor-modifying prop-erties.Due to its moistening nature,when used in the form of pills as drastic formulas,the intention is to moderate their aggressive ac-tion.This approach incorporates tonification within the attack,aiming to eliminate pathogens without damaging healthy qi,and to strengthen healthy qi without retaining stasis.As a formulation adjuvant,honey's gradual release of medicinal properties is advanta-geous.It not only allows for the slow dissolution and prolonged effect of honey-based pills,and its malleable physical properties also ena-ble its formation into suppositories for treating specific conditions.Honey,with sweet flavor and neutral nature,serves as a processing ad-juvant,which moderates the properties of other drugs while fulfilling roles such as toxin reduction and effect enhancement.It can not on-ly resolve the toxicity of single drugs,but also counteract the combined toxicity of two mutually antagonistic drugs.Honey,through its sweet and moderating nature,benefits primordial qi.Zhang Zhongjing frequently employed honey to enhance the functions of formulas to fortify the spleen,tonify the lung,moisten dryness,and promote fluid production.关键词
