Abstract

Utilizing multi-source observational data from Guangdong's islands,platforms,buoy stations,and coastal automatic stations,combined with radar,lightning information,and the ERA5 reanalysis datasets,this study conducts a comprehensive statistical analysis of thunderstorm gales in the coastal areas of Guangdong during the flood seasons from 2021 to 2024.The key findings are as follows:In the coastal areas of Guangdong,thunderstorm gale days are frequently accompanied by whole gale,with daily peak commonly observed in the central offshore regions.The monthly distribution of thunderstorm gale days exhibits a bimodal pattern,with a primary peak in June followed by a secondary peak in August.Maximum wind speeds predominantly occur during daytime hours.The circulation patterns associated with thunderstorm gales can be classified into four distinct types:pre-trough,post-trough,easterly,and high-pressure.Among these,the pre-trough type is the most prevalent,characterized by a strong dynamic forcing mechanism.In contrast,the post-trough type exhibits the highest level of atmospheric instability and maximum vertical wind shear,making it particularly conducive to extreme convective winds.The high-pressure type is marked by significant thermal forcing and distinct"dry upper-layer and wet lower-layer"structure,whereas the easterly type generally presents less favorable conditions across various physical parameters.Squall lines and banded echoes are more likely to occur in the pre-trough and post-trough patterns,while scattered echo patterns are typically associated with the high-pressure and easterly systems.Atypical echoes are primarily linked to the high-pressure pattern.Detailed case analyses demonstrate distinct evolutionary characteristics in radar reflectivity patterns throughout the initial,development,and mature stages of thunderstorms.
