Delayed Retirement:Research Focus,Evolution,and Trends

Abstract
As a key national strategy to address population aging and alleviate financial pressures on the pension system,delayed retire-ment has drawn considerable academic interest in China.This study utilizes CiteSpace to perform a visual analysis of 750 CSSCI journal articles published between 1999 and 2025,offering a systematic examination of the evolution,major themes,and emerging trends in this research area.Findings indicate that studies on delayed retirement in China have evolved through three distinct phases:preliminary exploration,rapid expansion,and fluctuating advancement.Central issues include the design of delayed retirement policies,adjust-ments to retirement age,coordination with pension insurance systems,and the development of flexible retirement mechanisms.The driving factors behind delayed retirement involve multiple dimensions,such as pension sustainability constraints,demographic shifts,extended life expectancy,the need for policy adaptation,evolving labor market demands,and changes in working life patterns.Pro-posed policy measures emphasize actuarial balance in pension funding,employment stability,institutional coordination,skills enhance-ment,and the optimization of implementation pathways.Nevertheless,challenges persist,including pension fund shortfalls,potential job displacement,benefit disparities,increased family care burdens,and limited public acceptance.Research on policy effects has fo-cused primarily on the pension system,employment composition,fertility decisions,and macroeconomic performance.International comparisons underscore the incentive-based model adopted by the United States,the integrated support system in Japan,and the con-dition-based approaches observed in the UK and France.Future studies should prioritize empirical assessments of policy impacts,the construction of a legal framework for retirement,safeguarding the rights of flexibly employed individuals,building employment service systems for the elderly,and advancing multi-pillar reforms within the pension insurance system.关键词
