Between the Ideal and the Reality:A Self-ethnography of the Professional Struggle of a Newly Hired University Counselor

Abstract
The research method of self-ethnography was adopted to explore the process of the emergence of professional frus-tration among newly employed higher education counselors.It was found that the professional experience of newly employed higher education counselors shuttled between two states of love and hate.In the short career journey,unclear boundaries,unacknowledged identity,the paradox in double-line promotion,and isolated situation accelerated the generation of their professional frustration.The phenomenon of professional frustration behind newly employed higher education counselors reflects reality that the vague bound-aries of responsibilities cause the excessive load of the counselor's role,the dilemma of identity recognition and the paradox of dou-ble-line promotion nurture the mind of stepping stone of counselors,and the lack of organizational support system dissolves the sense of professional belonging of counselors.Based on this,we should clarify the job boundaries of counselors by focusing on their main duties,enhance the social influence of counselors'profession while creating a professional culture atmosphere,construct coun-selors'image to be"professional student worker"in professional development,and deconstruct the negative self and construct the positive self in self-negotiation.关键词
