Changes of Carbon Storage and Carbon Sink in Plantation Forests under Three Management Modes in Fujian Province

Abstract
[Objective]Increasing the carbon sequestration function of forests is an important means to achieve high carbon sinks.The management of harvesting in plantations forests plays a key role in in-creasing carbon storage and carbon sinks.Investigating the carbon storage and future carbon sink dynam-ics under different management modes in Fujian Province's plantation forests can provide scientific refer-ences for forest management decision-making.[Method]Based on the data from the first to ninth Nation-al Forest Inventory data of Fujian Province,the Richards growth equation was used to establish harvest-ing models,including the"Management Plan"harvesting method,the Constraint-Optimization method,and the Simulation Measurement method.These models were used to predict the carbon storage and carbon sink potential of plantation forests in Fujian Province up to the year 2118.[Result]Without harvesting,car-bon stock gradually increased,reaching a total carbon stock of 16 770.59×104 t for broad-leaved forests in Fujian Province by 2030 and 20 607.10×104 t by 2060.However,the carbon sink level will decline sig-nificantly,from 321.36×(104 t·a-1)in 2030 and to 39.16×(104 t·a-1)in 2060.By applying the felling pat-terns,the areas of each age group tend to stabilize at a certain proportion.In the"Management Plan"har-vesting method,the proportion of young forests is the largest,which is 29.72%;in the Simulation Measure-ment method,the proportion of mature forests is the largest,which is 23.75%;and in the Constraint-Optim-ization method,the proportion of over-mature forests is the largest,which is 38.61%.The carbon sink level remained stable,with the total carbon sink of broad-leaved forests reaching 561.62×(104 t·a-1),428.59×(104 t·a-1),and 301.53×(104 t·a-1)by 2060.Significant differences in carbon density were observed among different tree species(groups)in Fujian's plantation forests.Quercus L.had the highest average carbon density(108.74 t·hm-2),while Eucalyptus spp.had the lowest(37.37 t·hm-2).Therefore,forest man-agement can prioritize the use of tree species(groups)with higher carbon density to replace those with lower carbon density,thereby increasing the carbon stock of artificial broad-leaved forests.[Conclusion]Different harvesting management strategies have significant effects on the carbon storage,carbon density,and age class structure of broad-leaved forests in Fujian Province.Among them,the"Management Plan"harvesting method performs best in enhancing carbon sequestration benefits,while the Simulation Meas-urement method is helpful in optimizing age class structure,and the Constraint-Optimal method achieves a balance between carbon storage and lumber production,thereby achieving ecological and economic bene-fits.It is evident that different harvesting strategies can enhance carbon storage,strengthen carbon se-questration capacity,and optimize stand structure.关键词
