Abstract
Dream narratives in Qing Zaju marks the return of the"Fantastic and Orthodox"aesthetic tradition in Classical Chinese literature.Addressing the late Ming drama's tendency to unilaterally pursue the"fantastic"(qi),which led to an imbalance between the fantastic and orthodox(zheng),resulting in superficiality and emptiness,dream-themed plays in Qing zaju exhibit distinct characteristics.First,in thematic treatment,playwrights pursued the"coexistence of the fantastic and orthodox."Playwrights either grounded their work in historical records for plausible fiction,continued or imitated literary classics,or drew from personal experiences.Adhering to the principle of"reality within fantasy"(xu zhong you shi),they endowed fantastical imagination with historical depth and realistic foundations.Second,in emotional expression,scholar-playwrights emphasized"preserving authenticity."Scholar-playwrights skillfully used dream narratives to convey personal career setbacks,anguish over the fall of their na-tion,and loyalist sentiments(yimin qinghuai),achieving profound"introspective self-expression"(ziwo xiexin).This allowed fantastical narratives to carry sincere individual life experiences.Third,dream narratives were integrated into the Confucian ethical framework,promoting moral values such as loyalty,filial piety,chastity,and righteousness(zhong xiao jie yi).This reflected a reaction against the late Ming trend of individual liberation and met the era's demand for restoring moral order.While this return to the fantastical tradition enhanced the spiritual depth of Qing zaju and rectified the decadence in theater,it also diminished drama's inherent artistic appeal due to excessive refinement(yahua)and moralization,revealing inherent tensions in literati playwriting.Thus,the dream narratives in Qing zaju represent not only a revival of the"fantastic and orthodox"tradition but also a crucial dimension for studying the evolution of classical fantastical narratives in China.关键词
