The Exegetical Elucidation of the Classic:A Study of Liu Xin's Scholarship on Chun Qiu Zuo Zhuan(春秋左传)

Abstract
Liu Xin's scholarship on Chun Qiu Zuo Zhuan(春秋左传)represent a significant topic in the history of"Chun Qiu"(春秋)studies during the Han Dynasty.However,due to the early loss of his works in this field,scholarly understanding remains limited.This paper takes the"Zhangju of Chun Qiu Zuo Zhuan"(春秋左氏传章句)compiled by Ma Guohan(马国翰)in"Yuhuan Shanfang Jiyi Shu"(玉函山房辑佚书)as the base text,and integrates these with surviving fragments of Liu Xin's theories preserved in works such as"Chun Qiu Shi Li"(春秋释例),"Chun Qiu Zuo Zhuan Zheng Yi"(春秋左传正义),"Wu Xing Zhi of Han Shu"(汉书·五行志),and"Lü Li Zhi of Han Shu"(汉书·律历志).By examining these sources,this paper investigates the compilation and transmission process of Liu Xin's monograph on Chun Qiu Zuo Zhuan(春秋左传),speculates on its structure,and analyzes the distinctive characteristic of his approach,namely,"interpreting the classic by elucidating the commentary".Furthermore,comparing Liu Xin's interpretations with those found in"Chun Qiu Gong Yang Zhuan"(春秋公羊传)and"Chun Qiu Gu Liang Zhuan"(春秋穀梁传)reveals his selective adoption of ideas from these rival commentarial traditions.Comparisons with later exegetical works like"Chun Qiu Shi Li"(春秋释例),"Chun Qiu Jing Zhuan Ji Jie"(春秋经传集解),and"Chun Qiu Zuo Zhuan Zheng Yi"(春秋左传正义)indicate that Liu Xin's scholarship demonstrated an awareness of general interpretive principles.The analysis also shows that while Du Yu(杜预)both inherited and refuted aspects of Liu Xin's theories,Kong Yingda(孔颖达)largely adhered to the principle of"subcommentaries not contradicting the primary annotations".关键词
