北平儿童救济机关的实践及其困境(1928-1948)
The Practice and Predicament of Children's Relief Institutions in Beiping(1928-1948)

Abstract
The Beiping Women's Relief Institute was the largest social relief organization in Beiping during the Republican era.Within the institute,the Children's Department served as a specialized branch dedicated to the care and support of children.The institution not only provided basic necessities such as food and clothing,but also offered a diverse range of educational programs encompassing moral cultivation,intellectual development,physical training,and artistic enrichment.Meanwhile,both religious and political forces intervened in children's daily lives,exerting varying degrees of disciplinary control over their bodies and behaviors.However,constrained by limited government funding,as well as deficiencies in relief systems and underlying philosophies,the institution faced persistent challenges.Children frequently suffered from malnutrition,outbreaks of infectious diseases,and dehumanizing treatment.By examining the life experiences of these children within the relief institute,this study reconstructs the everyday realities of assisted youth in Beiping from 1928 to 1948.Furthermore,it sheds light on the interactions among diverse social actors—including the state,the public,and the children themselves—and offers valuable insights into the evolution of child welfare and social relief mechanisms in modern China.关键词
