Concentration Distribution and Sea-air Fluxes of Volatile Halocarbons in the Pearl River Estuary-Western South China Sea in Autumn

Abstract
The concentration of trichlorofluoromethane(CFC-11),iodomethane(CH3I),dibro-momethane(CH2Br2),and monochlorodibromomethane(CHBr2Cl)in the seawater and atmosphere were measured simultaneously in the Pearl River Estuary-Western South China Sea during October,2023.The horizontal and vertical distributions of the four volatile halocarbons(VHCs)and their influ-ences were investigated,and the sea-air fluxes of the four VHCs were estimated.The results showed that the mean concentrations of CFC-11,CH3I,CH2Br2,and CHBr2Cl in surface seawater were(12.74±10.66),(12.18±12.43),(10.79±7.72),and(21.66±17.45)pmol·L-1,respectively.The distribution of VHCs in the surface seawater showed a trend of high concentrations in the near shore and low values appearing in the open waters,with the high value occurring in the coastal waters of the Pearl River Estuary and the eastern Hainan Island.A combination of water masses,anthropogenic sources,and algae releases contributed to elevated concentrations of the four VHCs concentrations in the surface seawater.The vertical distribution of CH3I and CHBr2Cl were characterized by the high values in the bottom layer due to the suspended release of bottom sediments or the release of benthic organ-isms.The mean values of atmospheric CFC-11,CH3I,CH2Br2,and CHBr2Cl concentration were(226.61±19.08),(1.19±0.75),(1.84±1.07),and(1.91±0.47)pptv,respectively.There was a large spatial variability in the distribution of the four VHCs concentrations in the atmosphere,influ-enced by meteorological parameters and the concentrations of VHCs in the surface seawater.The esti-mation results of the sea-air fluxes indicated that the area of the Pearl River Estuary and the Western South China Sea in autumn was a source of CH3I,CH2Br2,and CHBr2Cl and a sink of CFC-11 in the at-mosphere.关键词
