Abstract

Expansive soils(fissured clays)are prone to cause engineering diseases such as subgrade deformation and slope instability due to their characteristics of drying shrinkage and wet expansion.The current GB 50112-2013 Technical Code for Construction in Expansive Soil Regions in China mainly focuses on building foundations and does not fully cover the special requirements of railway engineering.Based on railway engineering practices,this paper proposes a classification system for expansive soils with the residual internal friction angle(φr),free swelling ratio(Fs),shear strength attenuation coefficient(α=(φf-φr)/φr),and unconfined compressive strength(qu)as the core indicators.In combination with the field geological characteristics(such as fissure development,disintegration,etc.),a two-stage discrimination process of preliminary judgment(qualitative)and detailed judgment(quantitative)is established.Through the data analysis of 11 typical railway construction sites,it is verified that this classification method can significantly improve the evaluation accuracy of subgrade slope stability and reduce the project rework rate by more than 30%.
