Effects of Organic Carbon Source Addition on Fertilization of Purple Soil and the Growth of Maize

Abstract
[Objective]This study aimed to investigate the effects of different carbon input levels and ap-plication ratios of organic carbon sources—mineral-derived potassium humate and organic fertilizer—on the physicochemical properties of purple soil and maize growth,so as to provide a scientific basis for en-hancing soil organic carbon,improving soil fertility,and increasing productivity in purple soil areas.[Method]A pot experiment was conducted using calcareous purple soil.Treatments included mineral-derived potassium humate at six carbon levels(0.05%,0.1%,0.2%,0.3%,0.4%,and 0.5%,labeled FA0.05-FA0.5),organic fertilizer at six carbon-equivalent levels(0.5%,1%,2%,3%,4%,and 5%,labeled OF0.5-OF5),and five combined application ratios of the two under a 2%total carbon condition(0%/100%,5%/95%,10%/90%,15%/85%,and 20%/80%,labeled T1-T5).A chemical fertilizer-only treatment(CF)with balanced nutrient supply served as the control.Soil nutrient content,aggregate composition and stability,organic carbon components,as well as maize biomass and nutrient accumula-tion were measured.[Result]Compared with CF,the application of potassium humate,organic fertil-izer,or their combinations significantly increased soil available nutrient content and the proportion of water-stable aggregates>0.25 mm,improved aggregate stability,and lowered soil pH.These treatments also enhanced the contents of soil organic carbon(SOC),dissolved organic carbon(DOC),microbial biomass carbon(MBC),particulate organic carbon(POC),and mineral-associated organic carbon(MAOC),with the most pronounced effects observed under FA0.4,OF5,and T3.Maize growth was also promoted,as reflected by increased aboveground biomass and nitrogen,phosphorus,and potassium ac-cumulation.The treatments FA0.4,OF2,and T3 showed the strongest promoting effects.Compared with CF,FA0.4 increased aboveground biomass by 24.9%-30.2%,NPK accumulation by 97.1%,and total productivity-related indicators by 50.4%;OF2 increased them by 13.7%-35.5%,74.7%,and 38.1%;and T3 increased them by 21.4%-54.7%,94.3%,and 53.0%,respectively.[Conclusion]The applica-tion of mineral-derived potassium humate,organic fertilizer,or their combinations enhances soil aggre-gate formation and stability by increasing SOC and its component contents,thereby improving soil fertil-ity.These practices also facilitate soil nutrient cycling,increase available nutrient levels,and ultimately promote maize growth and land productivity.In summary,a carbon input of 0.4%for potassium humate,2%for organic fertilizer,and a combined ratio of 10%potassium humate to 90%organic fertilizer under 2%total carbon are recommended as appropriate management strategies.关键词
