The effects of parental source and cadmium addition on the germination of Solidago canadensis seeds

Abstract
Ongoing climate warming and nitrogen deposition,coupled with the substantial challenge of cadmium pollution,significantly restrict plant growth and development.To reveal the response of invasive plant offspring to cadmium(Cd2+)contamination,we selected Solidago canadensis seeds derived from four parental sources under warming and nitrogen addition,established four Cd2+concentration gradients(0,10,50,100 mg·L-1),and conducted germination experiments to examine the effects of parental seed source and Cd2+addition on seed germination.The results showed that:(1)Compared with the control(0 mg·L-1 Cd2+),10 mg·L-1 Cd2+addition significantly increased the germination index and vitality index of seeds from the parental control,50 mg·L-1 Cd2+addition significantly enhanced their germination rate,germination index,and vitality index;however 100 mg·L-1 Cd2+addition significantly reduced the germination rate and vitality index of seeds from four parental sources.(2)In the control(0 mg·L-1 Cd2+),parental nitrogen addition significantly increased the germination potential,germination rate,germination index,and vitality index compared with the parent control,but this positive effect gradually diminished with increasing Cd2+concentration.(3)Regardless of Cd2+concentration,the germination index and vitality index of seeds from parental warming were significantly lower than those from the parent control.(4)The tolerance of seeds from four parental sources to Cd2+showed as follows:parental nitrogen addition,parental control>parental warming,and parental warming with nitrogen addition.Overall,Solidago canadensis seeds exhibit strong resistance to cadmium stress,with parental nitrogen addition enhancing this tolerance,whereas parental warming offsets the positive effects of parental nitrogen addition on its offspring.关键词
