Abstract

Land use changes significantly affect soil carbon and nitrogen cycles.This study investigated the impacts of converting grassland to afforested land following grassland retirement in the southern mountains of Lanzhou(1800-2100 m),located at the western edge of the Loess Plateau,using natural grassland as a control.We focused on changes in soil organic carbon(SOC)and soil total nitrogen(STN)under the two land-use types.The results showed that SOC did not differ significantly between grassland(12.83 g·kg-1)and afforested land(12.00 g·kg-1),whereas STN differed significantly(1.29 g·kg-1,0.62 g·kg-1).Vertically,SOC exhibited surface accumulation,while STN did not follow this pattern.In the mid-elevation range,grassland SOC(12.14 g·kg-1)in the 15-30 cm soil layer was significantly higher than that in afforested land(9.38 g·kg-1).In contrast,at high elevations,the opposite pattern was observed in the 0-15 cm layer.With the exception of the high-elevation 0-15 cm layer,STN was significantly higher in grassland than in afforested land across all elevations.Soil water content(SWC)and soil total phosphorus(STP)were identified as the main factors influencing SOC and STN under both land-use types,with elevation also playing an interactive role.These findings suggest that the conversion from grassland to forest in the study area has not enhanced carbon and nitrogen sequestration.Therefore,careful consideration is needed when implementing grassland to afforested land measures.
