Effects of soil mulching duration on the appearance and nutritional quality of Phyllostachys prominens shoots

Abstract
[Objective]Phyllostachys prominens is an important shoot-producing bamboo species in the hilly regions of southern China.Soil mulching cultivation is a widely adopted management practice for this species.However,long-term soil mulching may lead to degradation of bamboo forest soil.This study investigated the differential changes in appearance,flavor quality,and nutritional components of P.prominens shoots under different soil mulching duration gradients,aiming to provide a refer-ence for optimizing soil mulching cultivation practices.[Methods]Shoots were collected from bamboo forests subjected to 1-,3-,and 5-year mulching treatments,as well as from a control(unmulched)forest.Their appearance quality,nutritional com-position,and amino acid content were analyzed and compared.[Results]Mulching for one and three years significantly in-creased shoot length and individual shoot weight(P<0.05),enhanced the bright yellow coloration of sheaths,increased the content of protein,crude fat,and starch,and reduced the levels of lignin and cellulose,thereby mitigating shoot texture coarse-ness.However,with prolonged mulching duration,shoot appearance and nutritional quality gradually diminished,accompa-nied by increased fiber content.Total amino acid and essential amino acid contents decreased significantly under mulching(P<0.05).Nevertheless,the proportions of umami and aromatic amino acids increased by 3.17%~26.91%and 5.49%~87.31%,respectively,while the proportions of sweet amino acids decreased by 12.49%~29.53%.[Conclusion]Soil mulch-ing cultivation significantly improved the appearance and flavor quality of bamboo shoots,but these effects vary dynamically with mulching duration.Mulching for one and three years synergistically enhanced shoot appearance,nutritional quality,and palatability,whereas mulching for five years led to nutrient competition and metabolic imbalance,causing a decline in certain shoot quality indicators.Taking production and mulching costs into comprehensive consideration,a 3-year mulching cycle is op-timal for achieving high quality and yield in P.prominens shoots.关键词
