Abstract

To address the flammability of poly(lactic acid)(PLA),a synergistic flame-retardant fiber system was developed using an organic phosphorus(OP)-based flame retardant and layered zirconium phosphate(ZrP),combined with an optimized melt-spinning and drawing process.The effects of the flame-retardant system and drawing conditions on fiber structure and properties were systematically investigated.The resulting PLA fibers exhibited balanced processability,flame retardancy,and mechanical performance.At OP and ZrP contents of 3.5%(w)and 0.5%(w),respectively,the composite PLA-3.5OP-0.5ZrP achieved a limiting oxygen index of 31.0%and a UL-94 V-0 rating.The peak heat release rate and total heat release were significantly reduced,while ignition time was markedly prolonged,indicating improved flame retardancy.Stress-induced crystallization was observed during fiber drawing in both neat PLA and PLA-3.5OP-0.5ZrP fibers.With increasing draw ratio,crystallinity,orientation,and tensile strength first increased and then decreased.At a draw ratio of 2.1,the flame-retardant fiber exhibited a crystallinity of 38.63%,orientation of 96.20%,and tensile strength of 3.2 cN/dtex,meeting most end-use requirements and demonstrating strong application potential.
