Abstract

Expandable graphite(EG)with intumescent flame-retardant properties and thermally stable micron glass fiber powder(GFP)were selected as synergistic flame retardants and reinforcing fillers for silicon foam(SiF).EG and GFP were uniformly incorporated into the SiF matrix via a physical blending method during the foaming process.In order to explore the effects of the ratio of EG and GFP on the mechanical and thermal stability of foam materials,the fire resistance and flame retardancy of foam were tested by limiting oxygen index,cone calorimeter and flame impact test.The optimized 5 g EG and 5 g GFP achieved a limiting oxygen index of 41.5%,and exhibited significantly reduced heat release and fire grouth rate index of 56.7%,while demonstrating exceptional resistance to 1 300℃fire exposure for 30 min.Moreover,its compressive strength largely increased by 156%,while tensile strength and toughness highly improved by 75.7%and 280%,respectively.The synergistic effects of EG and GFP effectively endowed SiF with high mechanical reinforcement,toughening,and fire-resistant performance.
