Abstract

Aiming at the problem of the frequent occurrence of water inrush disasters in deep foundation pits with multiple confined aquifers,this study investigated the prediction method for water inflow.Based on the classical large well method theory,a prediction formula for water inflow that included a bypass resistance coefficient(ξ)was derived by analyzing the groundwater bypass paths and the variation of the hydraulic gradient at the toe of the diaphragm wall.A deep foundation pit project with multiple confined aquifers in southern China was analyzed.Its engineering hydrogeological characteristics and the common features of similar cases were systematically reviewed.Based on this,the water inflow rates of the foundation pit were calculated using both the code-specified formula and the proposed prediction formula,and the results were compared to the actual inflow rates obtained from field dewatering tests to verify the accuracy of the prediction formula.The findings revealed that the improved prediction formula for water inflow rate,established based on the Dupuit steady flow theory and flow net analysis and incorporating the boundary conditions of the diaphragm wall,could characterize the influence of the bending resistance of the bypass path.The common characteristics of such deep foundation pit projects with multiple confined aquifers included the absence of local aquitards,strong connectivity between aquifers,and significant overflow recharge phenomena.The errors in predicting the water inflow of the foundation pit at a maximum drawdown of 33.6 m were 10.7%for the code-specified formula and 1.13%for the improved formula,indicating a significant enhancement in prediction accuracy.This water inflow prediction method considering the bypass effect of the diaphragm wall can effectively reflect the influence of the retaining structure on the seepage field,and can provide a theoretical basis for the safety design and groundwater control of deep foundation pit projects with multiple confined aquifers in coastal regions.
