Abstract

The current mechanical ventilation design of emergency rescue stations at the entrance of railway tunnel groups only considers the influence of unidirectional natural wind inside the tunnel on the smoke propagation from trains in open sections,while little research has addressed the propagation characteristics of fire smoke under the coupling effect of canyon wind outside the tunnel,especially the coupling of canyon wind and natural wind.For this purpose,this study established a scaled-down experimental model based on the Froude criterion,and employed a particle image velocimetry(PIV)system to capture the fire smoke diffusion path in real time.The propagation characteristics of fire smoke in open sections of railway tunnel groups were then analyzed under the coupled effects of varying canyon wind speeds and natural wind directions.The results indicated that smoke spread in open sections of railway tunnel groups was susceptible to the influence of canyon winds,and this influence depended on the wind direction combination and the relative magnitude of wind speeds.For a tunnel on one side,there existed an unfavorable wind direction combination and a critical wind speed.For tunnels affected by canyon winds,the canyon wind could shorten the smoke diffusion length inside the tunnel,thereby facilitating the optimization of ventilation design parameters for emergency rescue stations at tunnel entrances.When the natural wind inside the tunnels blew in the same direction,the opposite tunnel was not affected by fire smoke,and there was a critical canyon wind speed for the affected side.When the canyon wind speed exceeded this critical value,that side was not affected by fire smoke.When the natural wind inside the tunnels was reversed and blew towards the outside of the tunnel,both tunnels were not affected by fire smoke.When the natural wind in the tunnels was reversed and blew inward,there was a critical canyon wind speed for the tunnel on the canyon wind side.When the canyon wind speed exceeded this critical value,that side was not affected by fire smoke,while the tunnel on the opposite side may be affected,and the influence of canyon wind should be ignored.The research results can provide a foundation for the mechanical ventilation design of emergency rescue stations at tunnel entrances in canyon areas.
