Abstract

To address the issues during tunnel construction in environmentally sensitive areas underneath an operating airport in a karst development area,namely significant vibration interference,a high risk of surface settlement,and slow mechanical excavation speed in hard rock sections,a construction scheme using the cantilever roadheader method was proposed based on the Changshui Airport Tunnel project of the newly built Chongqing-Kunming High-Speed Railway.This was achieved through literature review,theoretical analysis,and by supplementing the traditional empirical selection method with considerations of the engineering geological conditions and relevant engineering cases.To verify the reliability of the proposed method,an analysis was conducted based on the site implementation,focusing primarily on excavation efficiency,construction energy consumption,and safety quality.The results showed that the cantilever roadheader method achieved good efficiency in sections with moderate surrounding rock strength(30~50 MPa),reaching an excavation rate of 10~15 m3/h and a monthly comprehensive excavation progress of approximately 50 m.Compared with the drill-and-blast method,the cantilever roadheader method incurred a higher unit cost for excavation.However,it offered superior control over the excavation profile,caused less disturbance to the surrounding rock,and generated lower vibrations,thereby meeting the stringent control requirements for such special environments.The successful application of the cantilever roadheader method in the Changshui Airport Tunnel project can provide a reference for the design and construction of similar tunnels underneath environmentally sensitive areas.
