Abstract

This paper utilizes data from A-share family-listed companies in China from 2008 to 2021,organizing and matching the names of actual controllers with corporate names.From the perspective of reputation management,this paper examines the impact of eponymous actual controller on corporate innovation.The study finds that the eponymy between family firms and their actual controllers represents a reputational burden,significantly suppressing corporate innovation investment as well as digital technology and green innovation.The cognitive faultlines formed within the top management team's internal interactions can promote innovation in homonymous family firms,while social category faultlines do not have the same positive effect.Mechanism research indicates that eponymy suppresses corporate innovation by increasing the degree of family overcontrol and the extent of reputational loss aversion,and cognitive TMT faultlines play a positive role in promoting innovation within this mediating mechanism.Further research reveals that the greater the reputational pressure family firms face in innovation failure,failure learning,financing,operations,and media coverage,the more eponymy will suppress corporate innovation.The research results provide a new interpretative perspective for understanding the suppression of corporate innovation by the reputational burden in family firms,as well as reveal the intrinsic logic through which the organizational design of top management teams and institutional arrangements can ameliorate the reputational risks associated with eponymous and invigorate the corporate innovative dynamism in family firms.
