Abstract

The prediction of river siltation state over the 100-year service period of railway is essential for high-quality route selection design.Significant uplift areas account for approximately 30%of China's land area.However,existing research has inadequately addressed the impact of river siltation on engineering safety in such regions,and there is also a lack of low-cost technologies for obtaining river siltation information.Therefore,a method based on a stream-power incision model is proposed to establish the criteria for river erosion and siltation states,and SWOT satellite data is used to estimate the siltation rate of the riverbed.Taking the China-Nepal Railway as an example,the proposed method is applied to identify the erosion and deposition status and distribution along six rivers with a total length of 807 km in an area of about 32 000 km²,and siltation rates are determined for 208 km of key reaches.On this basis,to address the intensification of debris flows and the main river interaction due to riverbed siltation in canyon sections,the principle of route selection for disaster reduction of"elevation avoidance"is proposed.For open valleys,a feasible zone for railway alignment is delineated that avoids debris flows on the same bank while circumventing the siltation risk of the main river.The results show that the method can obtain the information of river siltation widely,efficiently and at low cost using only publicly available data,with accuracy matching the design depth of the preliminary route-selection stage.The methodology and findings serve as an exemplar for advancing railway alignment survey and design technology by through the application of frontier tectonic geomorphology theories and new satellite remote sensing technologies.
