Treatment of Dry Eye Based on the Theory of"Five Emotions Governed Solely by Heart"

Abstract
Dry eye is a common chronic ocular surface disease with increasing prevalence.Due to the lack of highly effective treatments,some patients develop psychological anxiety,and clinical evidence suggests that integrated Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)and Western Medicine yields better outcomes.Dry eye corresponds to"baise disease"in TCM,often treated via visceral syndrome differentiation,particularly focusing on liver and kidneys.The rise and decline of visceral essence influence emotions,while emotional activities also affect visceral functions.Thus,dry eye is closely linked to emotional disturbances.Although emotional injuries are attributed to the five viscera,their root lies in the heart.Anxiety affecting heart injures lungs,when combined with wind evil or dryness evil,body fluids are consumed,causing ocular dryness.Overthinking affecting heart injures spleen,overthinking causes Qi stagnation,impairing spleen transportation and leading to malnourishment of the eyes and abnormal fluid distribution,resulting in Baise disease.Anger affecting heart injures liver,failure of liver to store blood and transform Qi into tears causes dryness and blurred vision.Fear affecting the heart injures kidneys,fear causes Qi descent,fright disrupts Qi,preventing kidney essence from nourishing the eyes and fluids from ascending,leading to dryness.Chronic kidney deficiency allows deficient fire to scorch the eyeballs.Overjoy affecting heart injures heart itself,excessive joy disperses heart Qi and disturbs the spirit,causing ocular malnourishment and insufficient tears.Heart fire flares upward to scorch tears,inducing dryness.This article proposes treating dry eye by integrating visceral syndrome differentiation with the theory of"five emotions governed solely by heart"to enhance clinical efficacy.关键词
