Content analysis and risk assessment of five heavy metals and harmful elements in Polygonati Rhizoma from Fujian Province

Abstract
[Purpose]The content of five heavy metals and harmful elements(Pb,Cd,As,Hg,and Cu)in Polygonati Rhizoma from Fujian Province was determined to comprehensively evaluate the safety of this herbal medicine.[Method]Samples were col-lected from 26 sites in the main production areas of Polygonati Rhizoma in Fujian Province.The content of heavy metals and harmful elements was determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry(ICP-MS).The safety was evaluated based on single-fac-tor pollution indices and Nemerow comprehensive pollution indices,and the health risks were assessed based on hazard indices and exposure limits.[Result]The content of five heavy metals and harmful elements in Polygonati Rhizoma from 26 sampling sites met the limit standards specified in the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China.The content of heavy metals and harmful ele-ments varied among the samples from different regions(P<0.05).The effects of bamboo forest,broad-leaved forest,and field plant-ing patterns on the content of five heavy metals and harmful elements in Polygonati Rhizoma were not significant.The safety evalua-tion results showed that the single-factor pollution indices and Nemerow comprehensive pollution indices of five heavy metals and harmful elements in Polygonati Rhizoma from 26 sampling sites were less than 1.0,which was within the safe range.The health risk assessment showed that the hazard indices of Cd,Hg,and Cu in Polygonati Rhizoma from 26 sampling sites were less than 1,and the exposure limits of Pb and As were greater than 1,indicating that the overall health risk was low.[Conclusion]The content of five heavy metals and harmful elements in Polygonati Rhizoma produced in Fujian Province is low,meeting the pharmaceutical safety level.The method used in this study is simple,reproducible,and provides a reference for the safety assessment and quality control of Polygonati Rhizoma.关键词
