Abstract

[Objective]The primary sources of drinking water in Yunnan are from reservoirs,which face seasonal manganese pollution issues that affect drinking water quality and supply safety.This paper aims to analyze the sources and causes of seasonal manganese pollution in reservoir raw water in China,compare the advantages and disadvantages of major manganese removal technologies,identify a highly effective and easily adaptable manganese removal process for practical application,and validate its efficacy.The goal is to address the difficulty of removing manganese through conventional water treatment processes and enhance drinking water safety.[Methods]The paper first summarized the characteristics and causes of manganese pollution in the reservoir,and compared the advantages and disadvantages of contact oxidation,biomanganese solidification and chemical oxidation methods.Based on the actual conditions of the Chuxiong water treatment plant(WTP),potassium permanganate was selected as the manganese removal method for investigation.Beaker tests were conducted to determine the optimal dosages,and pilot-scale tests were performed to verify its effectiveness.[Results]The beaker experiment results showed that a potassium permanganate dosage of 0.8 mg/L achieved the best performance,with a removal rate of 95.5%.To ensure effective removal,the ratio of potassium permanganate dosages to consumed manganese should exceed the theoretical value of 1.91.Productivity tests demonstrated that when raw water manganese levels ranged from 0.41 mg/L to 0.58 mg/L,adding 0.8 mg/L of potassium permanganate effectively removed manganese.When the ratio of potassium permanganate dosage to raw water manganese concentration exceeded 1.6,the finished water manganese level was below 0.01 mg/L,meeting the Standards for Drinking Water Quality(GB 5749-2022).[Conclusion]Potassium permanganate is suitable for the tested WTP and achieves significant manganese removal effect.On this basis,the paper summarizes existing challenges and optimization strategies for the potassium permanganate-based manganese removal process.During operation,close attention must be paid to raw water quality and changes in finished water manganese levels,regular inspections of reaction basins should be strengthened,dosage must be strictly controlled,and automated and smart management approaches should be integrated to ensure drinking water safety.
