Abstract

[Objective]Biological membrane processes are widely used in urban wastewater treatment,industrial wastewater treatment,and other fields.The fillers in wastewater treatment pools are an important factor affecting the effect of wastewater treatment.This study explores the impact of the physical and chemical properties of different fiber fillers on the chemical oxygen demand(COD)removal rate in the biological membrane process for wastewater treatment.[Methods]Six types of fibers,including polypropylene fiber,polyester fiber,polyacrylonitrile fiber,polyvinyl alcohol fiber,glass fiber,and asbestos fiber,were used for wastewater treatment research.The study analyzed the impact of fiber density,hydrophilicity,and biocompatibility on COD removal rate,and conducted surface modification research with strong acids and bases.[Results]The results showed that the choice of fiber fillers had a significant impact on the COD removal rate in biological membrane water treatment.Among the six types of fibers,polyacrylonitrile fiber performed the best,while asbestos fiber performed the worst.There was an optimal range for the density of filler fibers,with the best effect when the density was close to and slightly heavier than water.Treating polyacrylonitrile fiber with strong acids and bases could change the fiber properties.The COD removal rate of alkali-treated polyacrylonitrile fiber increased to 91.1%after 10 hours,while the acid-treated was 77.0%,and the untreated control group was 80.3%.The COD removal rate was related to the hydrophilicity and biocompatibility of the fibers,and had a greater correlation with biocompatibility,showing that the greater the weight of the biofilm per unit volume of fiber,the better the treatment effect.[Conclusion]The characteristics of fiber fillers significantly affect the efficiency of biological membrane processes for wastewater treatment.Organic fibers,especially polyacrylonitrile fibers,perform the best due to their high biocompatibility and suitable density.Inorganic fibers have poor dispersion and low specific surface area,resulting in poorer performance.Surface modification can effectively enhance fiber properties,with alkali treatment significantly enhancing the ability of biofilm attachment by introducing hydrophilic groups and increasing surface roughness.In practical applications,polyacrylonitrile fiber is particularly suitable for the advanced treatment of high-concentration domestic wastewater,and the alkali modification treatment process can be directly integrated into existing biofilm reactors to reduce operational energy consumption.
