Abstract
Background:Many plant extracts have been found to be able to treat hypertension and prevent related repro-ductive system impairments.Aqueous extract of a mixture of the leaves from Persea americana,the aerial parts of Cymbopogon citratus,the fruit of Citrus medica and honey(named PECINEY),has proved to be effective in the management of hypertension on rats.
Objective:The aim of this study is to assess the effects of PECINEY on reproductive system of alcohol-induced hypertensive male Wistar rats.
Methods:Hypertension was induced by oral administration of 40％ethanol(V/V;5 g/kg body weight)to the rats during six weeks.Concomitantly,distilled water,PECINEY aqueous extract(100 mg/kg and 150 mg/kg)or nifedipine(10 mg/kg)were giving to different groups.One another group also received Viagra,in addition to alcohol,on the 21st and 42nd days,respectively,before sexual behavioural and muscle strength evaluation.At the end of the treatment period,hemodynamic parameters were recorded and sacrifices performed.Blood from the abdominal artery and some organs(penis epididymis,testis,liver and kidney)were collected for biochemistry parameters assay and histology.
Results:PECINEY aqueous extract was able to prevent the rise in blood pressure induced by alcohol on rats,as well as the associated dyslipidaemia,oxidative stress,sexual motivation and performance and muscle strength im-pairments.In the same model,PECINEY also preserved spermatogenesis as well as seminal vesicle and epididymis structure and function.
Conclusion:The management of hypertension with PECINEY could then preserve the integrity of reproductive system in a model of alcohol-induced hypertension in male rats.关键词
