Carbon emission reduction effect of farmland infrastructure:an empirical study based on rice farmers in 5 provinces(municipality)within the Yangtze River's middle and upper reaches

Abstract

Scientifically revealing the carbon emission reduction effect and mechanism of farmland infrastructure is of great practical significance.It helps advance the construction of farmland infrastructure in an orderly way and accelerate the low-carbon transformation of rice cultivation.Using a questionnaire survey method,data from 285 rice farmers in 5 provinces(municipality)within the Yangtze River's middle and upper reaches were collected.Carbon emission intensity(CI)was calculated by using the ratio method,while marginal carbon abatement cost(M_cost)was estimated by applying the shadow price method.A mediation effect model and a Probit model were employed to explore the impact and mechanism of farmland infrastructure construction on carbon emission reduction in rice cultivation.The results indicated that:farmland infrastructure significantly reduced CI,with road engineering exhibiting a strongest effect.Green technologies played a mediating role in this process,among which pesticide reduction substitution technology and water-saving irrigation technology demonstrate significant mediation effects.Field road had a significant inverted"U"shaped impact on M_cost.To accelerate the low-carbon transition of rice production,priority should be given to promoting the renovation and upgrading of field road projects,establishing an"engineering-agronomy"integrated emission reduction model,and assessing emission reduction costs to advance the phased construction of farmland infrastructure.
