Abstract

In this study,water-soluble acrylic resins(WAR)was synthesized using hydroxyethyl acrylate(HEA),hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA)and methyl methacrylate(MMA)as monomers,ammonium persulfate(APS)as an initiator,and 3-mercaptopropionic acid(3-MPA)as a chain transfer agent.However,the flammability of WAR limited its practical applications,necessitating flame retardant modifications for improved safety.To enhance the flame retardancy,the synergistic effect of acrylamide(AM)and tris(hydroxymethyl)phosphine oxide(THPO)was investigated,focusing on their impact on the physical and flame retardant properties of WAR.The results showed that when the molar fraction of AM in the monomer mixture was 5%and the molar fraction of THPO in the monomer mixture was 15%,the modified resin exhibited excellent flame retardancy.The limiting oxygen index(LOI)increased to 27.2%,passed the UL-94 V-0 flame retardant test.Compared to the unmodified sample,the char residue improved to 10.24%,the LOI was enhanced by 8.9%,and the mass retention after thermal degradation increased by 8.19%.In addition,the tensile strength increased from 8.42 MPa to 10.16 MPa.
