Application of intergenerational program in older adults with cognitive impairment:a scoping review

Abstract
Objective:To conduct a scoping review on the application of intergenerational program in older adults with cognitive impairment.Methods:Literature on the application of intergenerational program in older adults with cognitive impairment were retrieved from PubMed,Web of Science,Cochrane Library,EMbase,CNKI,WanFang Data,VIP,and SinoMed.The retrieval time spanned from database establishment to December 31,2024.Data extraction and analysis were conducted based on the search results.Results:A total of 24 articles were included.The types of intergenerational program activities encompassed intergenerational recreational,educational,care,and Maria Montessori programs.The intervention frequency for intergenerational care was 5 times per day for 5 days.The frequencies for intergenerational recreation,education,and Maria Montessori activities were mostly once or more per week,lasting from 1 to 12 months.The review found that intergenerational program had positive effects on the cognitive function,psychological state,and quality of life of older adults with cognitive impairment.Conversely,intergenerational program also improved younger people's understanding and attitudes towards older adults with cognitive impairment,enhanced their empathy and personal development,and positively impacted their families and personal growth.Conclusions:Intergenerational program provides diverse interventions for older adults with cognitive impairment and also exerts positive influences on younger people.However,research on the application of intergenerational program in China is still in its exploratory stages.Future studies could investigate their value within family interactions.关键词
