A review on the application of acupoint stimulation in the treatment of postoperative cognitive dysfunction in elderly patients

Abstract
Perioperative surgical trauma,anesthetic drugs,stress response,postoperative pain and other factors can cause a decrease in the reactivity and functionality of neurons,often leading to delayed recovery of postoperative cognitive function in elderly patients.In severe cases,it may develop into postoperative cognitive dysfunction(POCD).Clinically this situation manifests as a decline in cognitive functions such as language,learning,attention,and memory,which affects postoperative recovery and reduces quality of life,causing a serious burden on both patients and society.Due to the incomplete understanding of the pathogenesis of POCD,optimizing cognition through various non-specific measures is still the main method for preventing and treating cognitive decline in elderly patients.However,clinical practice often faces limited effectiveness of various prevention and treatment measures,so it is urgent to seek an effective method.Acupoint stimulation therapy treats systemic diseases through meridians and acupoint conduction,including simple acupuncture,electroacupuncture,and percutaneous acupoint electrical stimulation.As a non pharmacological treatment method,its application during the perioperative period has been proven to improve clinical efficacy,alleviate preoperative anxiety,reduce anesthefic drugs,lower stress reactions and postoperative analgesia to varying degrees.At the same time,it can also be used as an intervention for POCD,which has a positive impact on improving patients'postoperative cognitive function.In recent years,acupoint stimulation has become a research hotspot for the prevention and treatment of POCD due to its wide adaptability,easy operation,significant therapeutic effect and few adverse reactions.However,the specific therapy selection often depends on the operator's personal experience,and there is no unified standard,resulting in research results being heterogeneous.This article provides a review of the clinical research progress on the therapeutic effect of acupoint stimulation on POCD in elderly patients.关键词
