The Interplay of Pitch and Phonation Type in Tone Perception:Evidence from the Changshu Wu Dialect

Abstract
Although both pitch and phonation type carry linguistic functions,their interaction remains inadequately supported by empirical evidence.This study explores the monosyllabic tone system of the Changshu Wu dialect through acoustic and perceptual experiments,first establishing its tonal inventory.The dialect comprises eight tone categories,displaying the typical Wu characteristic of a dual-register contrast:higher-register Yin tones correspond to normal voice,while lower-register Yang tones correspond to breathy voice.In the perception experiment,we designed two minimal pairs—"Yin Ping(阴平)vs.Yang Shang(阳上)"and"Yin Shang(阴上)vs.Yang Shang(阳上)"—to examine native listeners'sensitivity to tonal perception across registers under conditions of either large or small F0 differences.Identification results from 31 native listeners demonstrate that tone recognition accuracy is influenced not only by F0 but also by phonation type.When the F0 difference is large,F0 plays a dominant role;when the F0 difference is small,phonation type serves a compensatory role.关键词
