Abstract

The permeability coefficient of soil is widely applied in various engineering scenarios,such as foundation design,settlement calculation,and slope stability analysis.Sandy soils,characterized by high hydraulic conductivity,allow for rapid determination of hydraulic conductivity;however,for the widely distributed low-permeability clays,the determination of hydraulic conductivity is time-consuming,and rapid methods for its determination are still lacking.To address this issue,this study proposed a rapid determination method for the hydraulic conductivity of clay based on Darcy's law and the Buchner funnel filtration test.The results indicate that the hydraulic conductivity data obtained from the filtration test align well with those from conventional permeability consolidation tests across different water content levels,validating the reliability of this method.For the three saturated clays and one flocculated modified soil,the relationship between void ratio and hydraulic conductivity displays a linear correlation on a double logarithmic scale,with the regression coefficient of a linear fit exceeding 97%.The three types of undisturbed soils exhibit different behaviors of permeability variation with void ratio.At low void ratios,Ningbo soil exhibits the lowest hydraulic conductivity,while kaolin has the highest.Conversely,at high void ratios,Wenzhou soil displays the lowest hydraulic conductivity,and Ningbo soil exhibits the highest.Additionally,the hydraulic conductivity of Wenzhou clay decreases after treatment with anionic polyacrylamide(APAM)flocculant compared to the untreated Wenzhou clay.The proposed method for rapid determination of hydraulic conductivity,based on Darcy's law and filtration testing,requires only a few hours,significantly reducing the 1~2 week testing period of conventional laboratory methods.This rapid method effectively predicts clay hydraulic conductivity across a wide water content range(0.5 to 3 times the liquid limit),satisfying the engineering demand for rapid determination of the hydraulic conductivity of clays and flocculated modified clays.This method provides valuable references for consolidation settlement calculation and engineering design,improving exploration efficiency and design accuracy.
