Abstract

Antibiotics,as a typical type of emerging environmental pollutant,can be carried by aerosols into the atmospheric environment.Prolonged human exposure to antibiotics in aerosols can lead to a series of allergic reactions and respiratory diseases.To systematically analyze the pollution of antibiotics in aerosols from typical emission sources,the research status was reviewed from aspects including collection methods,detection methods,pollution characteristics,and health risks.The most commonly used collection and detection methods for antibiotics in aerosols are active sampling and high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry(HPLC-MS),respectively.Vancomycin,monensin,and sulfamethoxazole were the antibiotics with the highest mass concentrations detected in total suspended particles(TSP)from hospitals,livestock and poultry farms,and urban environments,respectively;erythromycin and meropenem were the antibiotics with the highest mass concentrations detected in fine particles from wastewater treatment plants and submicron particles from hospitals,respectively.The release of aerosols from typical emission sources can increase antibiotic pollution in the surrounding environment.Taking livestock and poultry farms as an example,the total mass concentration of antibiotics detected in TSP at the downwind direction was several to dozens of times higher than that at the upwind direction.The exposure dose of antibiotics in aerosols to children via the respiratory pathway was higher than that to adults.By summarizing the current research status and proposing key future research directions,this study is expected to provide references for the monitoring and protection against antibiotics in aerosols.
