Abstract

The concentrations and speciation variation patterns of phosphorus pollutants in the influent and effluent of 11 municipal wastewater treatment plants(WWTPS)in typical regions of the upper,middle,and lower reaches of the Yangtze River Basin were investigated and analyzed.Emphasis was placed on discussing the phosphorus removal efficiency of different biochemical processes and advanced phosphorus removal processes,as well as their relationship with the diversity of phosphorus-accumulating organisms(PAOs).The results showed that due to differences in industrial structure and economic development level,the influent total phosphorus(TP)concentrations of municipal wastewater plants in different regions of the Yangtze River Basin exhibited the spatiotemporal characteristics of being higher in the lower reaches,relatively lower in the upper and middle reaches,and gradually decreasing from the upper reaches to the reservoir area of the middle reaches.Among them,the detected concentrations of organic phosphorus and hypophosphite/phosphite pollutants in wastewater plants in Hubei Province were relatively high,which was consistent with the background of industrial structure.The effluent TP from the biochemical units of different wastewater plants was mainly composed of suspended total phosphorus and dissolved orthophosphate,and these two components accounted for more than 80%of the TP concentration.Among them,the influent organic phosphorus at a concentration of 0.3~0.4 mg/L could be effectively removed by the biochemical units.Meanwhile,significant differences were observed in the TP removal rates among different treatment units of various wastewater plants,and the relative abundance of PAOs could not reflect the phosphorus removal efficiency of the biochemical units.
