Abstract

To explore the differences in the pollution characteristics of microplastics between sandy and muddy sedimentary environments,this study conducted a comparative analysis of the distribution,compositional characteristics of microplastics in beach and mangrove sediments of Hainan Island,as well as the impact of human activities on these microplastics.The results showed that the abundance range of microplastics in beach sediments was 39.37~93.74 n/kg,with the highest abundance observed in Sanya.The abundance range of microplastics in mangrove sediments was 164.70~3432.67 n/kg,and the highest abundance was found in Danzhou.Microplastics in beach and mangrove sediments were dominated by fibrous PET and flaky PP-PE,respectively.Compared with beach sediments,mangrove sediments had a higher microplastic abundance(17.09 times)and microplastic diversity index(1.44 times).The reasons for the differences between the two might be attributed to the variations in microplastic sources,hydrodynamic conditions,sediment particle size,and organic matter content.It was indicated by the correlation analysis that microplastics in beach sediments were mainly affected by residents' daily life and tourism,while those in mangrove sediments were mainly influenced by fishery and aquaculture.
