Abstract

To further analyze the impact of long-term changes in offshore phytoplankton on ecosystem evolution and carbon cycling under global change,we chose Jiaozhou Bay as a typical coastal area in the Chinese seas.We also investigated the long-term variations in the carbon biomass of phytoplankton and their environmental factors in different regions of Jiaozhou Bay from 2004 to 2016.The results revealed significant variations in annual mean carbon biomass across regions(P<0.05).The annual mean carbon biomass in the northern region of the bay(NB)was higher((4.22±3.59)mgC/m³)than in the central region(CB)((2.34±1.01)mgC/m³)and the outer region of the bay(OB)((2.52±1.79)mgC/m³).The annual mean carbon biomass of phytoplankton also showed distinct trends in the three typical regions.It declined in the NB,with diatoms as the primary contributor.In CB,the bio-mass initially decreased before increasing again,with diatoms remaining the dominant contributors,although the contribution of dinoflagellates grew over time.The ratio of dinoflagellate to diatom carbon biomass in OB in-creased,indicating a rising contribution from dinoflagellates.Seasonal patterns further highlighted regional differ-ences.In NB,the phytoplankton carbon biomass peaked in summer and was markedly higher than that in other seasons(P<0.05).In CB and OB,the highest carbon biomass was recorded in winter,remarkably exceeding that in other seasons(P<0.05).Temperature,phosphate,and dissolved inorganic nitrogen were identified as the key fac-tors influencing these variations.This study provides a new perspective on the dynamics of the Jiaozhou Bay eco-system and provides scientific support for future monitoring and management of this offshore ecosystem.
