Chemical sensing during substrate attachment and meta-morphosis in marine invertebrate larvae
摘要
Abstract
Marine invertebrates are widely distributed throughout aquatic ecosystems and play crucial ecological roles regarding various aspects such as marine biological invasion and fouling(e.g.,barnacles and Ascidians),ma-rine fisheries or aquaculture(e.g.,sea cucumbers and oysters),and marine ecosystem restoration(e.g.,corals).The planktonic larvae of many marine invertebrates exhibit a"Metamorphic Competence"stage,in which they attach and metamorphose in response to external inducing signals.Environmental chemical signals are diverse and easily dispersible, playing a significant role during larval settlement and metamorphosis.By detecting chemical cues oc-curring in seawater, larvae locate suitable attachment sites to complete their metamorphosis, leading to individual and population growth. This paper mainly reviews the recent research progress on the role of chemical signal in-duction during the attachment and metamorphosis of various marine invertebrate larvae. It discusses the fundamen-tal characteristics of chemical sensing systems in larvae from the perspectives of external environmental factors and internal physiological processes. It also summarizes the advanced biological technologies that can be applied to studying larval chemoperception and explores future research directions and potential applications. The article deepens our understanding of the mechanisms underlying chemical signal-induced substrate attachment and meta-morphosis in marine invertebrate larvae, providing scientific evidence and practical guidance for biofouling control, aquaculture management, and marine environmental protection.关键词
