Abstract

To verify the effect of hydrofoil appendages installed at the bow and stem of high-speed ships in reducing hull resistance and pitching motion,towing tank tests were conducted.First,the drag reduction effect of the hydrofoil appendages in calm water was verified.Results show that the drag reduction effect of hydrofoil appendages is excellent.For the scheme with a smaller chord length for the bow appendage,the drag reduction rate is over 10%within the Froude number(Fr)range of 0.4 to 0.5,with a maximum drag reduction rate of 14.55%.For the scheme with a larger chord length for the bow appendage,there is an excellent drag reduction across the Fr range of 0.3 to 0.5,with an average drag reduction rate of 16.95%,and the maximum drag reduction rate of 20.49%at Fr=0.43.Then,the effectiveness of the hydrofoil appendages in reducing the ship's pitching motion in waves was tested.Results show that the hydrofoil appendages can effectively reduce pitching motion in both regular and irregular waves.In regular waves,the average reduction in pitching amplitude is 36.43%,and in irregular waves,it is 52.17%.Additionally,the hydrofoil appendages can also reduce the ship's resistance in waves,achieving a maximum drag reduction rate of 19.53%and an average of 17.35%in regular waves,and a drag reduction rate of 7.73%in irregular waves.The model tests presented demonstrate that installing hydrofoils at both the bow and stern of a ship can simultaneously reduce hull resistance and wave motion response.
