Abstract

Objective To explore the relationships between physical exercise behavior and academic procrastination in junior high school students,clarify the role of academic self-efficacy in this relationship,and provide empirical references for optimizing adolescents'learning behaviors.Methods From September to November 2023,a stratified random sampling approach was adopted to recruit 2 250 junior high school students from 16 middle schools affiliated with the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps for an offline questionnaire survey.The assessment instruments employed in this study included the physical activity rating scale,academic self-efficacy scale,and academic procrastination scale.A total of 1 943 valid questionnaires were obtained.Pearson correlation analysis,multiple regression analysis,and Bootstrap method were employed to analyze relationships among variables and calculate effect sizes.Results The physical exercise behavior was significantly positively correlated with academic self-efficacy(r=0.34,P<0.01),and significantly negatively correlated with academic procrastination(r=-0.77,P<0.01);meanwhile,academic self-efficacy was significantly negatively correlated with academic procrastination(r=-0.49,P<0.01).The physical exercise behavior could directly and negatively predict academic procrastination(β=-0.77,P<0.01);after incorporating academic self-efficacy,the negative predictive effect of physical exercise behavior on academic procrastination remained significant(β=-0.68,P<0.01),and academic self-efficacy exerted a partial mediating role in this process(β=-0.26,P<0.01).Furthermore,the Bootstrap method results revealed that academic self-efficacy had a significant mediating effect between physical exercise behavior and academic procrastination,with an effect size of-0.002(95%CI:-0.003 to-0.002),accounting for 10.53%of the total effect.Conclusion Physical exercise behavior can not only directly affect junior high school students'academic procrastination,but also indirectly exert its effect through academic self-efficacy.Schools and families should prioritize improving students'academic performance by encouraging regular physical exercise.
