Abstract

This study focuses on the bracket sets of Tengwang Pavilion from the Song Dynasty,as depicted in Qiu Ying's Ming Dynasty Work Album after Song Masters.The restoration of the pavilion's original polychromy is attempted based on the coloring standards stipulated in Yingzao Fashi(Treatise on Architecture Methods).By analyzing both the visual details in the architectural painting and relevant construction background,the research determines the type of timber used,establishes the building's hierarchical status,and identifies the bracket set polychromy as the high-grade"Wucai Bianzhuang"(comprehensive multicolor decoration).The results demonstrate the value of architectural paintings as visual references or"renderings"in historical architectural studies,and reveal the interdependence between aesthetics and grade within the polychromy conventions of the Song Dynasty.This research provides methodological insights for the restoration of traditional Chinese architectural polychromy.
