Abstract

Objective:To explore the application methods and effects of the narrative medicine teaching model during the clinical internship phase for undergraduate students in oral and maxillofacial surgery.Methods:A total of 60 undergradu-ate students from the 2020 cohort of Tongji Medical College,Huazhong University of Science and Technology,entering the oral and maxillofacial surgery internship at Tongji Hospital were randomly divided into an experimental group(n=30)and a con-trol group(n=30).The control group received conventional teaching,while the experimental group employed both convention-al teaching and narrative medicine teaching.After the internship,empathy levels and doctor-patient communication skills were evaluated through questionnaires,scoring,and interviews.Differences in empathy ability,doctor-patient communication skills,and professional identity between the experimental and control groups were compared and observed.Results:The empathy levels and doctor-patient communication skills scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group,with a statistically significant difference(P<0.05).Conclusion:The narrative medicine model effectively ad-dresses the shortcomings of humanities education in traditional technical training and significantly enhances interns' empathy understanding,communication skills,and comprehensive clinical thinking abilities.It is an important approach to cultivating high-quality oral medicine talents in the new era.
