摘要

Abstract

To investigate sexual morphological differentiation and reproductive strategies in Synanceia verrucosa,this study systematically measured 42 morphological traits(including 8 meristic traits)and 14 visceral organ masses from 66 adult specimens collected from the Dongsha Islands.The number of oocytes in stage IV ovaries from 15 females was also quantified.Using one-way ANOVA,ANCOVA,and principal component analysis(PCA),sexual dimorphism patterns,fe-male fecundity,and their interrelationships were examined.The results showed that:1)Sexual dimorphism:Adult females exhibited significantly greater body length,head width,mouth width,and pelvic-fin base length than males.PCA re-vealed body mass,head width,and pre-dorsal distance as core drivers of sexual divergence in these local traits.2)Inter-nal organs and energy allocation:Females possessed significantly heavier gallbladders,stomachs,intestines,gonads,and total visceral mass,indicating a bias in energy allocation toward reproductive functions.3)Individual fecundity and adap-tive strategy:Absolute fecundity of females increased with body length.Maximizing reproductive benefits in high-predation benthic environments is achieved by enlarging abdominal cavity capacity(via increased pelvic-anal fin distance)to el-evate egg production,coupled with an ambush feeding strategy(low activity and metabolism).This study demonstrates female-biased size dimorphism in S.verrucosa,where larger females exhibit relatively higher fecundity,providing novel insights into the reproductive biology of marine teleosts.
