Abstract

To investigate the physiological regulation mechanisms of Thalassia hemprichii and Cymodocea rotundata in response to the fluctuation of seawater salinity,the antioxidant enzyme activities,metabolite contents,above-ground and below-ground total nitrogen(TN)and total phosphorus(TP)contents of the two seagrasses were measured at different sa-linity amplitudes within the salinity range of 25‰~35‰.These physiological indicators were analyzed to evaluate their re-sponses to salinity changes.According to the results,the activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD),peroxidase(POD)and ascorbic acid peroxidase(APX)in both seagrasses increased substantially with greater salinity amplitude,however,the activities of Cymodocea rotundata's SOD and POD decreased substantially under the maximum salinity amplitude.The activities of catalase(CAT)of the two seagrasses decreased substantially with the increase of salinity amplitude,and the total phenol content of the two species also decreased significantly with the increase of salinity amplitude.The contents of malondialdehyde(MDA)and proline(Pro)of the two seagrasses increased substantially with the increase of salinity am-plitude.With the increase of salinity amplitude,the nitrogen content in the leaves of Thalassia hemprichii increased sub-stantially,while the total nitrogen content in the stems and roots decreased sharply.In contrast,the nitrogen content in the whole plant of Cymodocea rotundata decreased significantly.No significant changes in TP content in the whole plant of the two seagrasses were observed with increasing salinity amplitude.These findings indicate that both Thalassia hemp-richii and Cymodocea rotundata exhibit adaptability to slight salinity fluctuation,but stress appears under higher ampli-tude,and Cymodocea rotundata shows lower tolerance to such stress compared to Thalassia hemprichii.
