Contrast Enhancement of Sonar Images Based on Discrete Wavelet Decomposition and Improved AGCWD Algorithm

Abstract
Due to the influence of the imaging mechanism,seafloor sonar images often have low contrast,which se-riously affects the manual interpretation and automatic recognition of sonar images.Therefore,improving the contrast of so-nar images is a necessary step in some cases.The adaptive gamma correction with weighted distribution(AGCWD)algo-rithm is often used to enhance the contrast of optical images,but it fails to enhance sonar images adequately.This pa-per identified the deficiencies of the control parameters and mapping functions in the AGCWD algorithm and proposed an improved version.Discrete wavelet decomposition was applied to decompose the original sonar image into low-frequency and high-frequency components.The improved AGCWD algorithm was used to enhance the low-frequency component,and the contrast-enhanced sonar image was obtained by reconstruction.The experimental results showed that the proposed method outperforms Histogram Equalization(HE),the gamma correction,and the original AGCWD algorithm in terms of contrast enhancement and image edge preservation.关键词
