Abstract

The Kuqa depression,as a favorable area for uranium exploration in the northern margin of the Tarim basin,is believed with top uranium resource potential in China,the understanding of hydrogeochemical characteristics is critical for the sandstone uranium mineralization within this region.This paper,based on geological background and hydrogeological surveys,monitored groundwater chemical composition data in sandstones.Using hydrogeochemical modeling methods,calculations were performed on the hydrogeochemical conditions for uranium mineralization in the Kuqa formation.The research results indicate that groundwater in the Kuqa formation is weakly alkaline(pH values ranging from 6.84 to 8.95)and in a weakly reducing environment(Eh values ranging from-32 to-5 mV),with the dominant hydrochemical type being Cl-Na.Groundwater in the sandstone was found originated from atmospheric precipitation recharge,with a 14C corrected age ranging from 13,398 to 31,978 years,uranium primarily exists in the form of UO2(CO3)34-(accounting for 47.30%to 96.87%),and the dissolution-precipitation of pitchblend is controlled by uranium concentration and redox potential(Eh value).Increases in uranium concentration or decreases in Eh value both favor uranium precipitation and mineralization.Furthermore,the modeling results quantified the boundary conditions for uranium concentration and Eh value in groundwater,defining the characteristics and conditions of uranium mineral dissolution-precipitation in the regional groundwater.These findings provide significant hydrogeochemical evidence for sandstone-type uranium exploration in the Kuqa depression and hold important guiding significance for delineating favorable uranium mineralization zones and improving prospecting efficiency.
