Impact of Internet technology on rural labor migration and its underlying mechanisms

Abstract
This study theoretically examined the intrinsic relationship between Internet technology and rural labor migration by con-structing a systematic theoretical framework and utilized data from the 2022 China Family Panel Studies(CFPS)to investigate the un-derlying mechanisms of the impact of Internet technology on rural labor migration.The findings showed that:① Internet technology sig-nificantly enhanced rural labor migration,increasing the possibility of migration by 27.9%.② Heterogeneity analysis demonstrated that Internet technology had a particularly pronounced impact on specific rural demographics(new-generation population,unmarried indi-viduals,those with lower educational attainment,and male individuals).At the household level,it significantly influenced families en-gaged in non-agricultural sectors and higher-income households,underscoring the differentiated social effects of Internet adoption.③ Mechanism analysis indicated that Internet technology affected rural labor migration primarily through three channels:the informa-tion search mechanism optimized resource allocation by reducing labor market information asymmetry,shortening job search cycles,fa-cilitating cross-industry mobility,and expanding employment options;the human capital accumulation mechanism conducted online training through Internet technology that enhanced the human capital reserve of rural labor force,thereby increasing their mobility pros-pects;the flexible employment mechanism broadened the boundaries of flexible employment through Internet technology,providing di-verse employment options for rural workers and facilitating the activation of the labor market.Endogeneity tests and robustness checks substantiated the empirical validity.Accordingly,this study proposes policy recommendations,including accelerating digital infrastruc-ture development in rural areas,enhancing vocational education and training programs,and promoting human capital improvement ini-tiatives,to maximize Internet technology's positive role in promoting rural labor migration and advancing rural revitalization.关键词
