Impact of transportation infrastructure construction on regional income convergence under the goal of common prosperity

Abstract
Narrowing the income gap,especially the regional income gap,is a key topic and a recognized problem concerning the real-ization of the goal of common prosperity in China.Transportation infrastructure construction serves as a fundamental component of the national economy and plays an important role in regional income growth.Based on the β-convergence model,this study used provincial panel data from 2001 to 2022 to explore the impact of transportation infrastructure construction on regional income growth and regional income convergence.The results showed that:① Transportation infrastructure construction could not only significantly increase region-al income but also promote regional income convergence,narrow regional income gaps,and thus promote the realization of the goal of common prosperity.② The impact of transportation infrastructure construction on regional income had obvious heterogeneity.Specifi-cally,the impact of transportation infrastructure construction on regional income growth and convergence was significantly different in coastal,inland,southern,northern,urban,rural regions,and regions with different economic structures.In addition,the impact of differ-ent levels of transportation infrastructure construction on regional income growth and convergence was not the same.③ The dynamic analysis showed that the impact of transportation infrastructure construction on regional income growth and convergence presented staged characteristics,and its effect varied with time.Based on the above research conclusions,this study suggests continuing to strengthen the investment in transportation infrastructure construction,promoting its quality and efficiency while increasing the density of transportation networks,seizing the opportunity of the Digital China initiative to build a smart transportation network system,realiz-ing the synergistic development between transportation infrastructure construction and industrial development,narrowing regional in-come gaps,and promoting common prosperity.关键词
