Abstract

This study aimed to compare the structural differences among insect-proof nets of various brands and specifications available on the market,and to evaluate the efficacy of a novel nano insect-proof net in controlling cowpea thrips Megalurothrips usitatus.The aperture parameters of the nets were measured,and both laboratory and field experiments were conducted to determine the exclusion effi-cacy of the nano insect-proof nets and their effects on field microclimate.The results revealed that the apertures of conventional insect-proof nets were generally rectangular,and the nominal mesh count tended to be higher than the actual counts.In contrast,the novel nano insect-proof nets featured square apertures with abundant nano-silica particles deposited on the surface(0.28%).Laboratory bioassays demonstrated significantly higher exclusion rates of M.usitatus adults in nano insect-proof net cages(54.43%-73.26%)than in conventional nets of the same aperture(46.32%-51.23%).Field experiments revealed that under nano insect-proof nets with a perforation rate of 69.40%,the density of M.usitatus adults was 5.2 per flower,which was significantly lower than that observed under conventional nets(8.7 adults per flower)and open-field conditions(11.9 adults per flower).Moreover,no significant dif-ferences were detected in light intensity,airflow velocity,temperature,or relative humidity among the nano net,conventional net,and open-field treatments.These findings indicate that nano insect-proof nets provide enhanced exclusion of M.usitatus without altering field microclimate,representing a prom-ising new physical control technology against thrips and other small insect pests.
