Abstract

Accurately estimating the amount and source of sediment in the Three Gorges Reservoir is of great significance to effectively study the problem of sediment deposition in the reservoir.In the past,the amount of sediment transporting from the upstream was taken as incoming sediment without considering the sediment yield of reservoir itself,which underestimating the actual sediment transported into the reservoir.In this paper,the soil erosion and sediment transported from the reservoir area in the Three Gorges Reservoir has been estimated based on the data analysis and revised universal soil loss equations.The results show that the annual soil ero-sion modulus in the Three Gorges Reservoir area from 2001 to 2012 are 1 844.24 to 2 474.26 tons per square kilometer.The total annual sediment amount transported into the reservoir ranges from 10.70 million tons to 24.54 million tons,which the largest amounts in Daxing River and Dongli River areas,and the smaller a-mounts in Xiangxi River and the Longhe River areas.Compared with the sediment discharges from 1963 to 1990,the main tributaries named Longhe River,Xiangxi River and Modao River,have decreased by 77%,79%and 88%respectively from 2001 to 2012.The sediment delivery ratios in different watersheds of the res-ervoir are between 0.07~0.27,and showed a fluctuating downward trend.Although the area of the Three Gorges Reservoir only account for 5.8%of the upper reaches of the Yangtze River,the amount of sediment transport from reservoir area accounts for more than 15%of the total amount of sediment transport upstream.With the continuous reduction of sediment upstream,the sediment discharge from the Three Gorges Reservoir area cannot be ignored.The research results can provide scientific basis for future research on sediment prob-lems in the Three Gorges Reservoir.
